Mike was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1999 during the summer before his senior year at Northside High School. The news was heavy, but hearts were not to be dampened. The Mike Aid Festival was held in August of 2000 at the NHS football stadium and raised more than $8k to help Mike’s family with the rising costs of his treatments.
Despite our hopes and prayers, Mike succumbed to his illness the next spring. He still lives on in our hearts to this day and will continue to do so as long as we keep playing music.
Shortly after Mike’s passing, yet another group of incredible people took up arms to serve his lasting memory.
Mike’s mother and father, Rick and Ann Calhoon, have held several charity golf tournaments to raise money for the Michael H. Calhoon Memorial Scholarship. Through their efforts, the Michael H. Calhoon Memorial Scholarship has awarded nearly $10,000 in scholarships to students who may not have been college bound without a helping hand. Since 2002, the scholarship has awarded $1,000 per year to a Northside High School student with average grades.
In August, 2010 Mike Aid... Ten Years After was held in celebration of Mike’s memory, and in an effort to raise money to add to the annual monies awarded as part of the Michael H. Calhoon Memorial Scholarship. All proceeds collected from the festival went towards the memorial scholarship. |
